Cody Lopasky holds a master’s degree from the University of Houston-Victoria, a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University, and an associate of applied science degree from Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service.   He is a Texas-licensed funeral director and embalmer and has earned the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice.

Cody began working in funeral service while still in high school and then through college.  Once licensed, he was employed as a funeral director and embalmer for several years before joining the education side of funeral service in 2016 when he accepted a full-time faculty position at his funeral service alma mater, Commonwealth Institute.

There, he served as the Associate Dean of Academics and the Distance Education Coordinator, before becoming President of the college in July of 2021. 

Cody is active in funeral service organizations and associations.  For the American Board of Funeral Service Education (the funeral service programmatic and institutional accreditor), he has chaired the Curriculum Committee, the College and University Council, and he currently serves on the ABFSE executive committee as president.  Cody is also president of the National Associated Colleges of Mortuary Science, and he serves on the board of directors for the National Museum of Funeral History.  He sits on the executive board for his regional chapter of the Texas Funeral Directors Association, and he recently finished a term on the Texas Funeral Service Commission’s Anatomical Advisory Committee. 

In addition to board and committee work, he has published numerous professional articles and is a contributing author for several funeral service textbooks.
