This webinar will discuss the impacts and causes of diseases that have been transmitted by tissue and cell transplantation, including semen and eye tissue, concentrating on infections, and briefly comparing them with the diseases that have been transmitted by organ transplantation, blood transfusion, and marrow transplantation. How tissue banks handled the investigation of some of the fatal cases in the past will be discussed; the recent fatal and nonfatal tuberculosis transmissions will be covered. How these transmissions were discovered clinically and the importance of biovigilance and the responsibilities of surgeons will be covered briefly.

D. Ted Eastlund, MD, has been a tissue banker and member of AATB for over 40 years, has been an AATB VP, president and chair of the AATB Board of Governors and has served on several committees. He was awarded AATB’s Kenneth W Sell Distinguished Service Award. In the early 2000s he led an AATB effort to investigate the fatal transmission of clostridium through tissue which resulted in changes in standards. He has been a medical director of a multi-tissue bank, semen bank, hospital tissue service, human milk bank, an embryo storage service, an OPO, fetal tissue bank, cord blood bank, blood bank and was national medical officer American Red Cross Tissue Services. For decades his interest in tissue and organ-transmitted diseases has led to testifying before congress, serving on an FDA Advisory Committee and giving invited lectures in 25 countries. He currently is medical director of the tissue bank at the University of New Mexico Hospital.

Dana has been involved in eye banking as a recovery technician, recovery manager, business development, research recovery development, and distribution manager and has been the Director of Tissue Recovery since 2022. Dana currently serves as the Vice-Chair for the EBAA Technician Education Committee.

Katie Hanzlicek is the Operations Manager at JRF Ortho where she supports supplier relationships, balances osteochondral allograft supply and demand, and manages the company quality systems. Katie began her career in tissue banking in 2012 as an Operations Technician at AlloSource and became CTSB certified in 2013. She gained hands-on experience in allograft tissue production, cleansing, and packaging, as well as product development, quality management, and technical writing. Katie co-authored two patents (currently pending) on rapid allograft treatment. She completed her Master of Business Administration degree with a specialization in Change Management in 2020 at the University of Colorado, aligning her passions in science and business.

Johnny Williams is a two-time tissue recipient. He received two osteochondral allografts to replace damaged cartilage in his knee when he was 16. Prior to this, Johnny was told he would need a TKA and until then, he would need to walk on crutches and live with the pain. Tissue donation absolutely changed Johnny so much so that when he graduated high-school, he went on to work as a student assistant with the same team of health care professionals that saved his knee at the Missouri Orthopedic Institute while attending college at Mizzou. Johnny went on to join a PhD program, studying osteochondral allograft transplantation in clinical patients. Johnny joined Arthrex soon after he graduated as an Associate Product Manger, working on the team that oversees OCA instrumentation.
